I respect Apple's decision, but there are people that use Macs for a living. It's not like I want an HDMI port, and whatever else your HP monster-laptop has. I almost never use the optical drive anyways, and I'm willing to have an external one in case I need it (it would fit with all the external drives I already have).

Daisy-chaining only goes so far, and HD on an eSATA drive actually scrubs smoothly! Hence, two FW800 ports, and 3 USB ports, plus expresscard. Ain't gonna.įor me it's more like a crapload of video equipment plus an eSATA disk. What were they thinking? If I want to use a FW audio interface and eSATA disks I have to go to 17" nowadays. Mid-2010 MacBook Pro's were amazing at that time (the beginning of the 2010s), but I don't think it will handle the current macOS and Logic well. Personally, I'd look for a more recent laptop, if your budget permits.

Hell, take out the Superdrive if you guys can't fit all those circuit traces/chips in. The reason being, Logic's full sound library is huge (at least 80 GB) and the SSD won't be able to hold all that. Essentially, something like the 2007 MBP model, just in unibody format. I'm absolutely willing to give Apple my money so long as they give me another firewire and USB port, and bring back the ExpressCard slot on the 15". As someone waiting with cash in hand for a new one, I of course would like it be sooner rather than later. Previously when Intel has released chips in january macbook pros have been updated/shipped in mid to late february. This would make sure both video cards get used to maximize performance or battery life when necessary.Īs to when the updates will occur, I would have to imagine it would be sometime in february. The one video related feature I would like to see is the ability to switch between the integrated graphics and the discrete graphics on the fly or at least without having to log out. Any video card remotely aimed at gaming laptops will never be in a 1" thick notebook.Ī good place to learn about all of the mobile video card stuff is at. There are a couple of instances of new machines using amd chips but they are few in number.Īlso keep in mind that Apple has never been one to really squeeze a top of the line video card into their laptops. One thing working in nvidia's favor is that there seem to be more laptops with 300 series chips on sale. I am not sure if Apple will do this though. I would like to see the 15" come with 512 mb on the low end and 1 gb on the high end. In terms of the video memory all of these cards support up to 1 gb of gddr3. This is a nice step up from anything else available at this thermal range but it is a tiny bit more power hungry than the current video card used in the macbook pro. I think the best possible card that could show up would be the radeon 5830. AMD has the Radeon 5650 which has a lower thermal envelope than what is currently used but has noticeably better performance than the 330m. This is essentially a rebranded version of the 230m and has mediocre performance. If apple goes with nvidia we would likely see a 330m.

There are a few options for the 15" and 17". Motherboard PC Chips M810LR BIOS AMI Processor 1. This would be similar to what they did with the imac. This of course would mean the 13" will continue to use the integrated 9400m. One thing that could happen with this refresh is that the 13" will continue to use core 2 duo with the i5 and arrandale i7 appearing only on the 15" and 17". Not to mention there probably isn't a place to put it on the logic board. It has about equal performance to the 9400m and the performance delta between it and a low end discrete card would be small. After doing some research I think there are a few chips that are likely to end up in a macbook pro if they are refreshed.įor the 13", I think it is likely that it will use the integrated graphics on the core i5 or i3. Is the Mac Ach turning into macrumors? This won't stop me from fueling the fire.Īdmittedly I have been waiting for the refresh as well.
